Design Considerations in Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers Based on Grating-Assisted Null Couplers

چکیده
The performance of a fully optimized optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM), based on null couplers and tilted Bragg gratings, is studied in detail. It is shown that maximization of the device performance involves three main optimization steps. First, the waveguide asymmetry ( 2 1 ratio) should be optimized in order to minimize the extinction ratio of the unwanted mode at the null coupler waist. Second, the coupler taper shape should be optimized in order to further minimize the aforementioned extinction ratio. Third, the grating tilt angle and relative width can be also optimized to give negligible backreflections at the input port and minimize radiation losses. The results show that the proposed high-performance OADM configuration can meet the stringent telecom specifications.

Optical add-drop multiplexers based on the antisymmetric waveguide Bragg grating.
A novel optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) based on a null coupler with an antisymmetric grating was designed and experimentally demonstrated. The antisymmetric grating exclusively produces a reflection with mode conversion in a two-mode waveguide. This improves the performance compared with previous demonstrations that used tilted Bragg gratings. Our design minimizes noise and cross talk prod...

We demonstrate an integrated tunable optical delay line in grating-assisted contradirectional couplers using a CMOS-compatible photonic technology. The input signal is delayed through dispersive Bragg gratings and distributedly coupled to the drop port of the coupler without backreflections. This add-drop design enables monolithic integration of grating-based delay lines without using optical c...

An optical add-drop multiplexer with a gratingloaded directional coupler in silica waveguides is demonstrated. The device for this configuration has a large fabrication tolerance and is small in size. A new scheme, in which the coupling length of the directional coupler is twice the complete coupling length, enables low cross-talk for both add and drop operations. This device is polarization-in...
